Depending on where your MySQL install is located, the path would be:
/path/to/mysql/mysqld -v
Another way is to run the following commands:
$ rpm -qa | grep mysql or $ rpm -qa | grep MySQL (for Linux)
$ pkg_info | grep mysql or $ pkg_info | grep MySQL (for FreeBSD)
